The room was bathed in pale blue light, sending purple shadows over the Taelon who sat by the window, cradling the tiny child in his arms. A small smile crossed his face at the thought. His child. His own.

His smile widened imperceptibly as he brushed his fingertips over its cheek, nestled in a small medical blanket. A small, glowing hand flailed, as if frustrated by its inaction.

For as long as Da'an could remember, he had wanted a child. The waning numbers of Taelon children had only enhanced his desire, but there had been only one way to create that child, the child that haunted his days and nights with a vision of possible happiness.

Jaridian.

The blue eyes darkened slightly as he touched the baby's face again, remembering the complex intertwining of Jaridian and Taelon DNA, attempting to repair some of the damage done over the centuries to create a Taelon baby. Even so, the results hadn't been all that Da'an had hoped for.

But it was a child, a Taelon child, HIS child.

Zo'or.

Da'an hugged the baby fiercely, eliciting a tiny cry of protest. He loosened his grip, peeled away the blanket from the baby's face, and looked into the blue eyes. Taelon eyes.

He smiled again, and stroked the child's face. He would grow quickly, be given every opportunity by his only parent. Da'an would take care of the baby in every way he knew how.

A nagging thought forced itself into his mind—how would the Jaridian genes assert themselves? The differences weren't physical, but tiny Zo'or seemed to cry more, demand more attention. He moved jerkily, and seemed impatient to move under his own power. Jaridian characteristics...

Da'an scattered the worries, focusing his mind. If not pure Taelon in body, he would be pure in spirit. Zo'or was a Taelon child. A flame in the burning light of the Commonality, with infinite potential for his race.

The child Da'an had always dreamed of...
