The grass under the skeletal building was burned, littered with debris. Richie's
mother had told him not to play there, because of the sharp metal and plastic
and glass, but he had sneaked off when she hadn't seen him.
His round, six-year-old's face split in a wide grin. He had already found a bunch of things: a funny-looking bunch of tubes and hoses, all purple. A stretchy bracelet with a metal thing inside it. A container of bluish goo that somehow had survived the huge blast.
Toyota was nosing in the piles of crumpled metal, his golden fur shining in the sunlight.
Richie's eye fell on a sparkling silvery thing, hanging from a twisted metal bar. He frowned as he ran over to it, gingerly pulling a long chain from the shards of glass.
It was a necklace of some kind, a very long necklace. Two little metal rectangles dangled from the end, clinking together as he bounced it against his hand. There were tiny letters in them, but they were too banged up for Richie to read.
Except for two wobbly words, scratched deep into the metal. FIND ME.
Richie frowned and ran a finger over the words, then shrugged. "Here, Toyota! Here boy!"
The dog's laughing face appeared, and Richie quickly slipped the long chain around his collar. The tags danced and bounced as the dog and the boy bounded away, watching the words FIND ME shine in the sun...
