My name is Liam Kincaid, Companion Protector. Resistance Leader.

To look at me, you'd think I was a normal human being. I look like one, I seem like one for all outside purposes. But I'm just a little more than a year old, with two jobs: one in the daylight, and one in the dark.

I look like any guy on the street. To the knowledge of the world, I am. But there's always the little voice in the back that reminds me just how different my origins are.

I was born to Companion Agent Siobhan Beckett, after only nine hours of pregnancy. One of my fathers was Ronald Sandoval, the man who now tries to kill me, but I can't bring myself to hate. The other was an unknown, hunted alien named Ha'gel who was exiled to the bottom of the ocean for millennia.

I look human. But I saw the disgust in Renee's eyes when Augur and I told her the truth. I think she finds it repugnant that someone with a non-human father leads the Resistance.

Why is that? My mother was human... does a part of my DNA define my allegiances? Does my body override my loyalty to the people who gave me a home and a place in the world?

If nothing else, if I act without regard for who my ancestors were, I owe it to them-they allowed me to stay, rather than killing or imprisoning me in fear of what I might be. Even when I took actions that looked dangerous, they never turned me out.

One of them twisted records to give me a place in the world. Another promised to take care of me.

My mother died because of the CVI the Taelons gave her. I promised her that Earth would not be turned into a killing field. And Lili and Amanda died...

I never knew anything but humanity, except for one trip to a Kimera repository. But there's no reason to cling to a dead species--the Kimera are gone from the universe. Ha'gel was the last.

Maybe if there were Kimera left, things would be different. But I am part human, and that is the only part of me that can find a niche in the universe. I am human because I can be nothing else, without being alone.
