Augur watched as Liam shifted uncomfortably in the passenger seat of the car. The kid was obviously having difficulty adjusting to the seatbelt.

Augur frowned. Babysitting was not in his current business plan, he had told Doors, but for a painting he found himself saddled with a seven hour old infant. So said infant could get a drink in most bars on his apparent looks, but Augur was still stuck with him.

The entire day seemed surreal in retrospect. Beckett's pregnact had whizzed by. Then he was faced with someone who looked four and could tackle puzzels so young as to make Dougie Howser look slow.

"May you live in interesting times." Augur whispered. He was finally starting to understand why it was a curse.

Liam seemed not to have heard him, after having finally settled his war with the seatbelt just as Augur turned onto the street that connected the main road to his abode. A few minutes later, Liam stared at the release button on the seatbelt for a long moment before figuring it out. Augur found himself smiling, the kid was a fast learner. Augur admired fast learners, he had to become one after his father left him an orphan at thirteen.

Liam had it harder. Not even a day old and already taken from his mother. Augur harbored no illusions about the probable fate of Beckett, and the bare thought of having Sandoval as your sole surviving relative (or for that matter any relative) made him shiver. Poor kid.
