Lili heard the knocking at the sliding glass door of her balcony. Outside was a man, with a sodden dark hood pulled over his face. Lili pulled on her bathrobe and opened the door, then peeled the hood back. It was Liam. His face was pale and dripping, and his curly brown hair was plastered close to his head.

Lili opened the door wider. "What are you doing on my balcony?" she asked.

Liam sighed and stepped in, squelching as he went. "I had to talk to someone," he said quietly.

"Couldn't you have come in the front?" Lili asked, shutting the door and folding her arms. "Okay, what is it, Liam? What's upsetting you?"

Liam took a deep breath. "Da'an."

"What about Da'an?"

"He lied to me, Lili." Liam voice was barely audible. Thunder crackled outside. "He said he didn't know about the Forge project, when it was his project all along."

Lili froze. "Did he give any reason?"

"No, except that the Jaridians are massing," Liam replied softly, squeezing the water from his sleeve. "Well... I sort of got the impression that he's becoming more desperate. More like..." He stopped.

Lili supplied, "Acting more secretive, like Zo'or?"

Liam nodded mutely.

Lili put her hands on Liam's shoulders, ignoring the water streaming into her sleeves. "Liam, listen to me. Da'an is not like Zo'or now. The sort of changes he's undergone are not the sort that can be wiped away with a little worry. And the things ahead won't be easy for him. Or for you. Okay?"

Liam nodded and sighed. "Thanks, Lili." He turned around and headed for the balcony.

"Wait," Lili said, picking up her slicker. "I'm driving you home. I can't stand to see you braving that storm all by yourself." She smiled and patted Liam on the shoulder.
