He was blind, deaf to the world. The pain in his green eyes flashed like
lightning, his halting gait betraying his feelings to the world.
The hills of Ireland were wreathed in springtime, a gently falling rain bedewing the green grass and the dark tombstones, fenced away from the small town. Liam just stared at one of them, then fell to his knees and pressed his cheek to the cold marble. Hot tears ran with the raindrops.
Lost. He had lost them.
Somehow, losing Lili hurt more than losing his mother, and the shock of that feeling had added shame to the maelstrom of emotion that roiled inside him. But he had known that Beckett's CVI was a constant dangerlosing her had been a shock, but not a surprise.
But Lili... had been such an integral part of his life. Somehow, he had felt that she would always be there, even though the rational part of him knew that it probably wasn't true. And now she was gone, without even a grave for her friends to visit.
Resting on the gravestone, Liam's hands tightened. And now Da'an was gone too... not dead, not even missing, but gone. Liam had trusted him with so much, and now... he had found out the hard way, that Bel'li was right.
But oh, how he wanted things to be different. He wanted life as it had beenhardly idyllic, but he had been happy.
Lili... Mother... Da'an... I've lost you all. I've lost almost everyone I ever trusted. Even if it was... even if it was the trust of a child... Is this growing up? Learning what loss and sorrow can teach you?
Slowly, Liam rose to his feet and brushed the damp soil from his pants, then ran his hand over the edge of the tombstone. "I promise I'll work against them," he said quietly. "So we can trust again."
